Top Half
8:51 - Gordon Edes makes the prediction that this ballgame will come down to Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. My rebuttal? Marino of course! Didn't say that out loud, but thought it...out loud.
8:52 - Forgive me Baseball Lords for what I am about to say. MY MAN, Ryan Kalish, just socked his first big league homer on a first-pitch hanging change-up from Vazquez to drive in Lowell (single). That ball cleared the right-field wall by plenty and crash-landed on a bench in the bullpen for good measure. Good for you, kid. Not so good for the Yanks. Boston now leads 6-3.
8:58 - And with that walk to ninth-hole hitter Jed Lowrie, Javy's night is done. To be fair he make it past the fifth inning, but in hindsight, that turned out to be a bad thing. He was cruising for a while, and I give him credit for some nice pitches in the fifth. Overall however a disappointing start for Vazquez, who had been heading in such a positive direction of late. Oh well. Time for the offense to win us a ballgame for a change. THE LINE: 5.1 innings, 6 hits, 6 runs (3 earned because of the Cervelli drop), 4 walks, 5 strikeouts, 2 home runs. Blah. Here comes Joba!
9:00 - During the pitching change, the Stadium camera threw what I suppose was a celebrity--he was sitting front row near the dugout--on the big screen. It wouldn't have been that big a deal except that the dude was sleeping! Some guy sitting behind him did the nice thing and tapped him to consciousness, upon which he preceeded to wave like a buffoon. Claaa-sic.
9:01 - Joba with a sweet reflex play on the Ellsbury smash. He deflected the beam with the glove and Cano made the strong off-balance throw to nab Jacoby by half a step. A hard-earned out, but a big one.
9:04 - Chamberlain's looked good lately, and he gets it done again here, inducing the pop fly off the bat of Scutaro. Those are critical, wound-clotting outs right there. The bullpen needs to hold steady here. I smell a comeback brewing. Once we get to that Sox bullpen...
Bottom Half
9:11 - ...That's if we can get to that Sox bullpen. That's gonna be a tall order against Clay tonight, whose cutters and changeups have made fools of the Yankee bats for the better part of the evening. One-two-three, Berkman-Granderson-Cervelli, as Francisco lines out to Drew to end the inning. Here comes Kerry Wood to face Papi, V-Mart, and Beltre. Oh boy...
